Natural Desires and Restrictions is concerned with language and artistic expression. Using my poem Natural Desires and Restrictions as starting point I have created an object where the letters are 3-dimensional and the frame itself together with the carefully arranged plastic packaging becomes the image. With this work I aim to displace what is considered to be the object, the image and the text in an art work.
I was educated at Wimbledon College of Art. My practice is process and research led and my work takes the form of drawing, painting, performance, video, sculpture and installation.
In my work I attempt to combine the poetic and personal with research. Natural environments feature in my imagery and I sometimes use found materials, which are arranged in a new context. I aim to transfer and compare historical findings, within art history, history of ideas and psychoanalysis to artistic expression.
I am interested in the relation between the unconscious and conscious in artistic expression. I have experimented with different methods to enable 'accidents' and make use of these. I deliberately combine chance with the controlled, stains and the accidentally found with conscious decision making and editing. Later works have been concerned with communication, traces of action, and the artist's mark.
