Since moving to Malmö from Toronto, I have become fascinated by the bicycle. Not only as a transportation module, but also as a design element in the environment.
In Toronto, as in most of North America, bicycles are used for exercise, with a few hardy souls commuting to work and back on bikes. But even then, the uniform of Lycra shorts, stretch t-shirt, helmet and racing gloves is part of the mystique of bicycling. A change of clothing is in the backpack. Bicycle lanes are few and far between.
We live in central Malmö and do not have a car. So, we use our bicycles on a daily basis. In my travels I have photographed multitudes of abandoned bicycles, the sea of bicycles around Centralen and details of bicycles from a design and sculpture aspect.
What are Life Cycles? Two wheels? A frame? Handlebars? Yes. But bicycles also create shadows, intricate designs and graphic elements in the urban environment. In my images of the life of bicycles I try to capture the various ages, moods and personalities of bicycles, single, or in groups.
On my travels I have also found and photographed bicycles in the local environment. The winter photos from Trondheim being examples.
